Piercing Pils Dogfish Head

Dogfish Head Piercing Pils

Piercing Pils is a czech style pilsner made by Dogfish Head Brewery. Dogfish Head brewery is a semi-local brewery to my region because I am from Philadelphia and they are from Delaware.  A Czech style pilsner has a very strong hops presence and has a gold clear tint to it. I dived in nose first to smell the beer to see what aroma I could pick up and came away worried I would not like this beer. I smelled that bitter hop aroma and instantly became scared I made a bad pick on this beer. Then I tried to smell again seeing if there was another aroma that could be picked up and that was a pear smell to this beer. which got me intrigued. To be considered a Czech style pilsner brewers use a spicy type of hops and Dogfish Head used the Saaz style hops. In this pale lager they also used a citrus style hop to cut the spicy of the Saaz with the citrus style Amarillo, to pair with the pears they added into the piercing pils. The alcohol by volume or ABV on this beer is six percent and IBU or bitterness of this beer is a 35.  In comparison to Red Chair, this beer should not be as strong in hop flavor because Red Chair was 60.

Goldish tint and clear throughout

Sometimes you can get fooled by your nose, that is what happened here with this beer and my nose. When I began to smell the aroma from the beer I was against trying this beer. Then I tried the beer because I am trying to become a craft beer enthusiast, ha ha ha, and was in for a surprise. Piercing Pils was something I could enjoy. The bitter aroma and hop smell I had in the beginning was replaced with a smooth tasting pilsner. At first taste one gets a bitter sip, which then turns into a juicy pear goodness. Surprisingly was into this beer and I usually am not a dogfish head fan because their brews tend to be on the hoppier side of beers like the india pale ales or (IPA's). Piercing Pils might get me to give dogfish head another chance and to try the other beers on their brew list.

If I had to rate this beer out of one hundred I would give this beer a eighty because of the taste it goes up in my mind, but the aroma does not do the beer any favors in my book. I highly recommend that you try this beer, which is one of the breweries seasonal beers. Get it while you still can.  Make sure you check out the Reader's Choice post and pick my first beer of March!!!
