Mckenzie's Black Cherry Cider

Mckenzie's Black Cherry Hard Cider

Trying to get more ciders to draw in some new followers, so the new cider I had was a black cherry hard cider made by Mackenzies. Out of all the ciders I have had while being able to drink this one is by far my favorite. This cider reminds me of Hanks black cherry soda. This black cherry cider is delightful and I suggest that you try it as soon as you can. Mckenzie's Cider is brewed out of New York and is paired with the Mayer Brothers Ciders. An aroma that a drinker would pull off of this cider is definitely a black cherry aroma.

Bottle and Cider Glimpse

Now the taste is a little different than the aroma of the beer. Someone enjoying this cider sure gets the black cherry taste when having it. Although you pick up a sweet cider taste that leaves an aftertaste of the bitter from the black cherry, which is good because thats the flavor of the cider. Mckenzie's made this black have a great taste and combined having a dry and sweet taste at the same time. The cider itself has an amber and clear tint to it.

Black Cherry Goodness

On average most ciders are around 5.0% and this falls into that alcohol by volume. It is not something to strong like a mead of to light like apple juice. Has the best of both worlds. I think that anyone that is interested in trying to get into ciders then I suggest starting with this because it will bring you into ciders very easily. I think that the black cherry flavor is get and can be dangerous in my opinion because it does remind me of drinking Hanks Black Cherry soda, does not make you think you are drinking a cider. If you have any questions on any beers I drink just leave a comment on that post or email me at campy4912@gmail.com.

Winter White ALE Bell's Brewery

Winter White Ale by Bell's Brewery

Been on a seasonal kick for beers. The new seasonal beer I had is Bell's Brewery, Winter White Ale. Bells brewery used a blend of malt and barley to give this beer the spice aroma and flavor without using any spices in the beer. Took a sniff to smell the aroma of the white ale and came up with a fruity, yet spice aroma from the beer.  Bell's Brewery is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I think if anyone could create a good winter ale it should be some brewery from Michigan, Boston, or any northern state because they know what people have to go through to get there beer. Looking at this winter white ale I could not help but think to compare this to Avery White Rascal's White Ale. Both are delicious in their own ways. Avery is an unfiltered white ale with a little more bitterness which I think pays off in the end when enjoying it. Then Bell's white is less bitter is a little more on the lighter side of beers. Both beers are delicious let me repeat myself and show the drinker a different twist on the white ale.

Winter White Ale has a ABV of 5.0% and IBU of 10

Bell's mastered the white ale in my opinion, because of the light smooth taste. I think to myself when drinking this beer, oh man I cannot wait for summer, thats how good it is. This ale has a great citrus flavor like more white ales do. The only thing I wish is that this beer was not a seasonal beer and could be enjoyed year round like Avery White Rascal. Anyone looking for good white ales, these are the beers you are looking for.

View of cloudy White Ale from Bell's

Think I might have to take a trip up to Kalamazoo to visit this brewery and try their other brews they have.

Time Whiskey Bar Philadelphia

Traveled down to Philadelphia, PA to visit friends that came in from out of town. We went to a local whiskey bar in Philadelphia, which had twenty rotating taps. I was extremely excited and check out their draft list and my friend from Oregon pointed out a beer that I had to have since he was visiting town. The beer was from Ninkasi Brewing Company and was called Devil Went Down to Oregon. This beer is a seasonal beer that is available from January to April. The alcohol by volume or ABV was 7.2% and the International Bitterness Units or IBU was 65. Devil Went Down to Oregon is a Imperial Dark Rye beer. It was a smooth beer and a great taste that I would order over and over again it was that great a beer. I strongly suggest you try to get your hands on this beer however you can its that good.

Devil Went Down To Oregon Ninkasi Brewing

The next beer I tried was from Boulevard Brewing Company. Beer was call Tank Seven Farmhouse Ale. Farmhouse Ales are also referred to sometimes as Saisons. The bitterness of this beer was a IBU of 38 and the ABV or alcohol by volume was 8.5%. After having these two beers I definitely needed some water because of how strong these beers were, Both were fantastic and I would highly recommend trying both. Tank 7 has a fruity taste but also has a smooth taste which leaves you puzzled on the aftertaste in a good way, leaving you asking what is that?

Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale Boulevard Brewing Company

The last beer of the night came down between Goose Island and Shawnee Brewing Company. Which was a Chicago Brewery versus a local Philadelphia Brewery. I wanted to support the local craft beer, so the Shawnee beer won. That beer was called Shawnee Chestnut Braun. The Chestnut Braun is a English Style Brown Ale. This beer reminded me of New Castle Brown Ale but ten times better beer. The ABV of this Braun Ale was 5.5%, so not as strong as the first two beers but was a solid smooth beer. Definitely had a nutty taste to the beer but I think that helped with the smoothness of the beer. The IBU of Braun Ale is 35. I would recommend this beer for anyone that is trying to find English Style beers or that likes a nutty taste to their beer.

Shawnee Chestnut Braun Ale Shawnee Brewing Company

I will be trying to visit more craft beer places like Time in Center City Philadelphia, PA. If anyone has a suggestion of a place I should visit or that would want to meet up at just let me know and we can go try some new craft beers.  I was told to go to Union Jacks in Glenside, so I think that might be my next visit.

Traditional Dry Angry Orchard

Angry Orchard Traditional Dry Cider

Alright, I've had a few ciders from Angry Orchard and felt that it was time to try the original to be able to compare it to the others. Here is a list of ciders by Angry Orchard that I've had: Ginger, Cinnamon, Hop'N Mad. When looking at the traditional dry cider it looks like most ciders do. Of course if you did not know Angry Orchard  is made by Samuel Adams Brewery. Most people do not know that the are made by the same company and are shocked when they find out. Only because people do not think that a good beer company would be able to make such a great cider that is not a beer. Thought I will say it was smart by them to do so, because there is a big market out there for people who like beer but cannot have it. Ciders are the closest thing to having a beer without having it, if it is brewed right, in my opinion.

Glimpse into the Traditional Dry Cider

I go to take a sip and begin to smell the cider to see the aroma from the cider. The aroma I took away from the cider was an apple aroma. The cider smells sweet like and apple. The taste on the other hand is not as sweet as the aroma. When tasting the cider I tasted a bitter bite to the cider and then a sweet taste lingering on the taste pallett. The dryness of the cider comes through when tasting the cider. The cider is not as sweet as some of their other ciders, but that's what a beer drinker looks for in the dry cider. Ciders are often categorized into sweet or dry like wines are. Examples of both  are as followed: Mckenzies Black Cherry is sweet and Hop'N Mad, Traditional Dry are examples of dry ciders.

Bottle and Cider

In looking at this traditional dry cider I think that this is a good tasting cider up there with Stella Cidre and Crispin Ciders. Anyone that wants to try to begin tasting ciders I would recommend this cider to them. Now in comparison to Hop'N Mad Apple that I had early in my blog, I would have the Hop'N Mad over Traditional Dry. Only because traditional dry is more like a cider and the Hop'N Mad Apple is more like a beer. Next time you look at a cider make sure you do not overlook it. Ciders are usually stronger than most domestic national beers like Coors Light, Miller Light, and Bud Light. Traditional Dry is 5.5 % and has an Amber color to the cider. The only downside to having ciders is the sugar headaches, you cannot have too many or else. The positive is that you can drink a lot of ciders and not feel as bloated like you do with regular beers because of the yeast.

Piercing Pils Dogfish Head

Dogfish Head Piercing Pils

Piercing Pils is a czech style pilsner made by Dogfish Head Brewery. Dogfish Head brewery is a semi-local brewery to my region because I am from Philadelphia and they are from Delaware.  A Czech style pilsner has a very strong hops presence and has a gold clear tint to it. I dived in nose first to smell the beer to see what aroma I could pick up and came away worried I would not like this beer. I smelled that bitter hop aroma and instantly became scared I made a bad pick on this beer. Then I tried to smell again seeing if there was another aroma that could be picked up and that was a pear smell to this beer. which got me intrigued. To be considered a Czech style pilsner brewers use a spicy type of hops and Dogfish Head used the Saaz style hops. In this pale lager they also used a citrus style hop to cut the spicy of the Saaz with the citrus style Amarillo, to pair with the pears they added into the piercing pils. The alcohol by volume or ABV on this beer is six percent and IBU or bitterness of this beer is a 35.  In comparison to Red Chair, this beer should not be as strong in hop flavor because Red Chair was 60.

Goldish tint and clear throughout

Sometimes you can get fooled by your nose, that is what happened here with this beer and my nose. When I began to smell the aroma from the beer I was against trying this beer. Then I tried the beer because I am trying to become a craft beer enthusiast, ha ha ha, and was in for a surprise. Piercing Pils was something I could enjoy. The bitter aroma and hop smell I had in the beginning was replaced with a smooth tasting pilsner. At first taste one gets a bitter sip, which then turns into a juicy pear goodness. Surprisingly was into this beer and I usually am not a dogfish head fan because their brews tend to be on the hoppier side of beers like the india pale ales or (IPA's). Piercing Pils might get me to give dogfish head another chance and to try the other beers on their brew list.

Dogfish Head Piercing Pils Czech style Pilsner

If I had to rate this beer out of one hundred I would give this beer a eighty because of the taste it goes up in my mind, but the aroma does not do the beer any favors in my book. I highly recommend that you try this beer, which is one of the breweries seasonal beers. Get it while you still can.  Make sure you check out the Reader's Choice post and pick my first beer of March!!!

Red Chair North West Pale Ale

Red Chair North West Pale Ale by Deschutes Brewery

Red Chair is an American Pale Ale. This North West Pale Ale is from Deschutes Brewery in North Western United States. Deschutes Brewery can be found in Bend, Oregon.  Hence the name Red Chair North West Pale Ale. After opening up this bottle and pouring it out, I instantly regretted picking this beer for my create your own six pack. The aroma came towards my nostrils and instantly could smell that hoppy aroma. I went in for the first taste and came away with a smack of hops to my taste buds. Red Chair hits you with hops all the way through until the last drop. If you are not a hop fan then I would suggest staying away from this beer. If your someone who likes hops in their beer then this is the beer for you. Red Chair has an IBU of 60 and an ABV of 6.2 %

Copper tint to Red Chair NWPA

I will say that if you are a beer drinker trying to get in to hoppier beers than this beer and A Little Sumpin Sumpin would be the beers for you. Red Chair has two different types of hops thrown in to this ale: Centennial and Cascade. The hops pack a citrus punch with a bitter hop taste. Once I get the bitter taste off the taste buds the pale ale actually goes down smoothly.

Glimpse of Bottle and Beer for Red Chair NWPA

Some Pale Ales tend to be on the hoppier side of the ales closer to Indian Pale Ales. Red Chair and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale are two beers that pale ales masquerading as Indian Pale Ales. If I had to recommend this beer I would recommend Red Chair for some that really likes hoppy beers and bitter tasting beers that are higher IBU's. I hope that I will be able to step outside my comfort zone of beers and be able to drink beers like this for the readers to give them insight into new beers.  I would score this beer out of one hundred a 80 because it is a decent beer and I think that most of you will enjoy the hoppiness of this beer. I will be buying a six pack soon and I will be opening it up to the readers to pick the first beer out of the six pack that I drink stay tuned and hopefully its the beer you pick.

Single Chair Magic Hat

Magic Hat Single Chair 5% ABV

Magic Hat Single Chair is a golden ale, that is brewed in Vermont. This golden ale got the name single chair because of skiing. Everybody wants to ride a Single Chair up to the top of the mountain and not have to share a lift up with anyone This lift is at Mad River ski resort in Vermont. This beer usually was sold at ski resorts because of the name, now its become available for all.  When taking my first whiff of the aroma from the beer I could not help but think of a dough aroma. You know when you are making dough and you first start to smell the dough rising that is the aroma I picked up when smelling this beer for the first time. Looking at this beer, a beer enthusiast can pick up the golden color on the beer from the Ale. In addition the beer has a light quality of a pilsner. This blending of to different beers gives Single Chair it's own uniqueness and rarity.

Golden cloudy glimpse of this golden ale.

When diving in for the first taste of this beer one can pick up the malt focus on this beer. I also picked up on the Dry-Hopping process in the beer. I usually am not a fan of hops in beers like India Pale Ales, but when the beers are made right where you do not get the bitter taste of the hops, I am a fan of. Single Chair was brewed right masking the bitter taste of the hops with the sweetness from the malt. That changes the complexity of the beer and makes it very easy to drink. Another way besides tasting the beer and finding out that it has a low bitter yet smooth taste is to look at its IBU, which stands for International Bittering Units. When looking at beers some people want their beer to be very bitter and strong hop taste, which would be a high IBU. Others when drinking beer are not looking for bitter beers and a strong hop taste in their beers, which would require a low IBU. Single Chair has an IBU of 17, which would put this golden ale on the low scale for IBU's. When drinking this beer there is no aftertaste like some beers will leave in your mouth and single chair just goes down so smoothly.

Single Chair is a seasonal beer from Magic Hat Brewing Company. I can understand why this beer is around from January to April. It is a perfect beer to enjoy after shoveling snow or going out on the mountains and skiing. When looking at this beer and trying to rate the quality of beer, it is very hard, because Single Chair cannot be looked at as one beer. The blending of the pilsner style and the golden ale style make rating this beer difficult. I think that I would rate this beer as a 81 because of the smooth blending of the two different styles of beer and the smooth taste of the beer.

Single Chair Golden Ale (Beer and Bottle)

Surprise under the bottle Cap.

I would recommend this beer for anyone that is looking for a very good seasonal beer that enjoys the winter weather, like myself.

Yards Brawler

Yards Brawler Bottle 4.2% ABV

When cracking up this ale one can instantly pick up the aroma and ale brewed beer.  It is one sweet malty smell. Took a sip and had a heavy ale taste but it was smooth. Malt taste comes from the brewing process when barley helps ferment the beer. A beer enthusiast should be able to pick up the hint of caramel in the beer, which adds to the sweetness of the beer. This ale is a Pugilist style ale, which is a mild ale that focuses on bringing the malt as a prime flavor in the beer. Yards Brawler has a brownish red tint to the beer. Definitely shows that this beer belongs in the Ale family of beers. Lets say that if you are not a fan of malt tasting beers than when drinking this beer you might want to have that in mind.

Brawler has been made by a local Philadelphia Brewery called Yards Brewing Company. Yards Brawler Ale is one of their most popular beers in my opinion. This beer could be used to cut spice out out of some dishes because of how sweet and smooth the ale is. In addition Brawler can also be enjoyed with friends during a look day because of the lower ABV (alcohol by volume).  I would recommend this beer for anyone that likes spicy dishes and that likes a sweeter tasting beer because of the caramel hint in the beer.

Brownish Red Tint to Brawler

I like Ales usually depending on if they are sweet or not, but this beer was a little too sweet for my taste buds. The malty character of the beer threw my taste buds for a spin. Too much malt in a beer can turn any beer fan against that beer because of the sweet taste. I  like this beer, but this would not be a beer I would drink all day. I could only have one or two beers of Yards Brawler before I had to switch to another beer or else I would be able to enjoy the other beers. If I had to rate this beer out of 100, I would give Yards Brawler a 79 because the beer is drinkable but not to crazy about the malt focus in the beer.

Hop'N Mad Apple

Hop'N Mad Apple from the Beer Expo

Alright I really have been craving this beer from the beer expo that I went to on January 31st. Found the cider at the local bottle store and had to buy it because I wanted to try a full glass, no two ounce sample. Angry Orchard has become a big commodity because of people trying to go gluten free. Angry Orchard is made by Samuel Adams Brewery. I know a lot of people that are gluten free that are looking for a great cider to have and not lose the beer taste that they use to be able to have. Hop'N Mad Apple in my opinion is that type of drink people are looking for, if you are use to having beer. When opening the bottle and pouring out the cider the drinker gets an aroma of apples. Began to sip on the cider and instantly notice that this cider has been made not as sweet as Angry Orchard products usually are. Thinking about that I began to think that the dry hopping had to do something with cutting out the sweetness of the hard cider. I have had many ciders and while drinking this cannot help to think that this one has become my favorite right now! The cider hits the taste buds with not a sweet taste, but a dry smooth taste because of the hops.

View of Hop'N Mad Apple Bottle 5% and Gluten Free

Hop'N Mad Apple glass and bottle

Glimpse of Hop'N Mad Apple

Started to drink this cider and was instantly hooked in to its cider goodness. I usually do not drink ciders because they are sweet and give me a sugar headache because of how sweet they are. Instead found that I would like to drink this all day because of how Samuel Adams Brewery dry hopped this cider. Hop'N Mad Appel is a refreshing twist on a hard cider because of the dry hopping process. While drinking this beer one can taste the hand pressed apples that were put into each cider and notice the goldish tint to the cider. If you are looking to try a new cider make sure this is the next cider you try I am sure you will not be disappointed and if you do try it let me know what your thoughts are about this beer.

Oatmeal Milk Stout

River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout 6.7%

River Horses Oatmeal Milk Stout, dark beer with a sweet aroma. Stouts are dark beers and the example of stouts that everyone knows is Guinness Stout. The River Horse version of the stout is completely different than Guinness version. When pouring this beer one cannot help but notice the dark color on the beer and the dark color of the head (foam at the top of the beer). The aroma that the Oatmeal Milk Stout gives off is a sweet aroma which invites the drinker in for a taste of the nectar. Plunging in after the sweet aroma, one begins to taste a sweet stout on their lips. The sweet taste comes from the malt that the beer brews with to give it the sweetness. The stout leaves the drinker with a sweet milky aftertaste which drinking a stout shows the full body of the beer off to the drinker. When looking at stouts a drinker wants to see that dark beer because that is what they are expecting, to see as well as the sweet taste of the Stout.

First Glimpse of the Oatmeal Milk Stout

Glimpse of the Darkness of the Stout

Head of the Oatmeal Milk Stout

River Horse Brewery is a local brewery to me because it originated in Lambertville, New Jersey. Then they moved to Ewing, New Jersey. River Horse has become a favorite local craft brewery of mine because of their style of beers. The oatmeal milk stout is an example of how to brew a great tasting beer. The complex and subtle taste of this beer allows one to become a fan of stouts. The oatmeal milk stout has a silky and smooth taste to the beer and is thick yet creamy taste to the beer. Stouts that I have looked at recently have been all around ten or eleven percent, so this stout does not have as much alcohol content in but still packs a great stout taste. After drinking this Stout one might want to look at Founders Breakfast Stout, which is one of the more popular stouts out there. Another Stout one might one to try after this would be Elysian Dragonstooth Stout. On a scale of one to one hundred I would have to give this beer a 84. Oatmeal Milk Stout would be recommended for anyone trying to get their foot into trying stouts, this would be a good starting stout beer to try.

Avery White Rascal

Avery White Rascal Belgian Style White Ale

New beer for the day was Avery Brewing Company: White Rascal. White rascal is a Belgian Style white ale that brews with spices. Poured the beer into the glass to be able to smell the aroma of the beer. Aroma of beers can be a deterring factor when trying beers for some people because people try beers by their nose and their taste buds. When taking in the aroma of this beer one can pick up a citrus aroma and cannot helped but be intrigued with where this beer might lead to. Took me away from the cold day and made me think of a warm beach. White Rascal smooth refreshing taste allows one to enjoy a few without feeling like they are getting hammered. While enjoying this Belgian Style White Ale one immediately recognizes the color of the beer, which has a goldish tint to the beer. I started to drink this beer and was instantly hooked because of the smooth taste to this beer. Whoever tastes this beer, instantly picks up the spices from the brewing process. Which helps one get an enhance the quality of the smoothness from this white ale.

Goldish tint of Avery White Rascal

Avery White Rascal reminds me of a Blue Moon type of beer, which is a Wheat Ale. I would have to say that if I had to take one or the other, I would have to say that Avery would be my choice. Avery White Rascal compared to Blue Moon has a full body flavor and a smoother taste. Another beer that is similar to Avery White Rascal is Ommegang Witte beer. White Ales have a light taste and could be drank all day. I could not help when drinking this beer but to notice the carbonation of the beer and I think that it helped me enjoy this beer because it did not settle and start to become warm. I strongly suggest tasting this beer if you are looking for a good tasting beer as well as a lighter tasting craft beer. Avery White Rascal gets a score of 85 out of 100 from me, because of the smooth taste and drinkability. Some beer drinkers want a craft beer that you can drink all day like: Miller Lite, Bud Light, and Coors Light. I think that this beer is a craft beer that can be drink all day and not make you feel bloated or sick because you have been drinking all day. Ladies could also be interested in this beer because it is not a heavy beer but it also has a great smooth taste.

BOLG BELGIAN STYLE TRIPEL ALE

BOLG BELGIAN STYLE TRIPEL ALE

I went to Wegmans and started to create my own six pack of beers to try and came across a new beer from the movie the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. The beer was called BOLG the creature that leads the orcs in the movie, they also had Smaug Stout and the Precious Ale. I wanted to try the BOLG and discovered that the beer was a Tripel Ale. A Tripel Ale is referred to as a tripel because they brew it with three times the malt of a regular beer and it is blended smoothly with spices. I added it on to my six pack of beers to try and then came home and tried it. I had this beer during the Super Bowl. I poured it out into my glass and saw a orange goldish tint to the beer.

Orange Goldish tint to the Tripel Ale
I smelled the beer to see what aroma I could pick up from the beer and I could pick up a spiced aroma from all the malts and spices thrown into the beer. This beer is officially called  Bolg Belgian Style Tripel (Hobbit Series) - Fish Brewing Company. I sipped on the beer and instantly became hooked to the beer. The beer was full of flavor and had a nice smooth bite to the beer. I could tell this was going to be a good beer. The beer came in a twenty two ounce bomber which is roughly a pint and six ounces worth of beer. BOLG Tripel Ale is listed at 9.5% alcohol content which puts it on the weaker end of Tripel Ales but there was nothing weak about this beer. This tripel ale was good until the last drop I could not put this beer down. Usually, tripel ales are between eight and twelve percent. If I had to recommend this to someone I would, I am telling you, you will not be disappointed in this beer. I even shared it with my friends dad who likes most of the same beers I do and he was not disappointed in the beer.

My view for the Super Bowl.

If I had to compare this to any Tripel Ales that are out there in the craft beer world; I would say River Horse Tripel Ale. Which will be my next Tripel Ale I will be posting on this blog. If you have any questions feel free to post your comments at the bottom and I will try to respond as quick as possible to your questions.

Beer Fest

This weekend I went to a beer fest that was located in Secaucus, NJ. The beer fest was the International Great Beer Expo. I went with my brother and his friend who lived in the area. I was so excited to go to the beer fest because this was my first beer fest that I have ever gone too. I think that these beer fest are awesome because it allows to try as many different beers as you want and submersus you into the beer culture. I highly recommend anyone that is interested in beer to go visit one of the Beer Expo's. I will be going to the next one, which is in Philadelphia,PA on May 30th. I took some pictures at the Expo that i wanted to share.

I did have more beers and the beer expo than just these pictures. I want to give a glimpse of what the beer expo was like. I had 25 beers altogether at the beer expo. many of the beers were stouts or IPA's. I had Beach Haus American pilsner and their Winter Rental, which was a Black Lager. I had Blue Moon's Peach wheat beer which is not available yet but it was very good can not wait to review it on here. I had a Black Lager from 3 Beards Brewery. I tried Strongbow cider, which is a very good cider but the cider that blew me away was the Angry Orchard Dry hopped cider. Some of the German beers that I had were Stiegl and Hofbrau which were both very good beers. I tried New Jersey Beer companies Stout as well as River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout. I also tried some west coast brewery beers such as Sneak Attack by 21st Amendment Brewery and Dragonstooth Stout by Elysian Brewery. Cricket Hill had a very good Tripel Ale at the beer expo. Original Sin cider was a cider that was very good as well and only had 7 grams of sugar in their beer and they handpress their ciders. Breweries that I missed at the beer expo was Flying Fish brewery and Erie Brewing Company because their tap was down. I found some Pennsylvania beers at the expo. They were Free Will brewing company, which I tried their C.O.B ale a coffee Brown Ale. They also had a mango habanero IPA. Next I found YARDS brewing company at the Expo and the beers they had were YARDS Brawlers and the RYE IPA. Last I stumbled upon Victory Brewing Company and they had two IPA beers at their tent; Dirt Wolf a double IPA and Victory 19 a session IPA.  I did stumble across some other beers at the event such as Bitburger and Shipyard's Imperial Bourbon Barrel Stout. Saranac Brewery in New York had a very tasty Prism White Ale. All in all this was a very informative beer expo and I can not wait until the one in Philadelphia.
